Recently I read an interesting post on Reddit asking what people found to be the most useful items to have for the first few days in their new home. I read through dozens and dozens of responses and put together this list of the most often sited items.

If you are surrounded in boxes, or the moving truck hasn’t even arrived yet, this list should help you through it.

Here are the top 25 items to have…

  1. Light bulbs
  2. Step stool
  3. Good ladder
  4. Extension cords
  5. Tape measure
  6. Pen & paper
  7. Chairs
  8. Coffee supplies
  9. Lock box with spare key for the front door
  10. Ice chest
  11. Soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes
  12. Plunger
  13. Stud Finder
  14. Bucket(s)
  15. Cordless Drill
  16. Something to use to cover the windows
  17. Flashlights
  18. Night lights
  19. Toilet paper
  20. Dolly
  21. Level
  22. Basic tool set
  23. Candles and matches
  24. First Aid kit
  25. Duct tape

Bonus Tip: If you are going to rent a panel truck for a DIY move, be sure to book one at least 2 weeks ahead, especially if you are moving towards the end of the month.

There you have it. I hope this list will save you a trip, or several, to the hardware and grocery stores and make your move-in a lot easier!
